Lady Holding a Sparkler

This page is distinguished by its unusual lighting effects, the incandescence of the sparkler as opposed to the faint light of the new moon. The prominent use of shadows is also unusual. Although some passages are beautifully observed—for example, the fleeing ducks and the sway of the principal figure’s pink sari—others, such as the rolled shades at the top of the picture and the architecture, are stock motifs.
