Bairadi Ragini: Folio from a Ragamala series (Garland of Musical Modes)

In this image lovers quarrel and the bedchamber remains empty, as evoked in a ragamala text: “That most beautiful one, wearing fine armlets . . . [is] holding off her beloved with her fly-whisk.” Much of Rajput style is distilled from early Mughal painting, as reflected in the architectural devices, the use of flattened color, and the figure types.
