Woman with a Sparkler

The shower of sparkles cascading from the firework held by the seated woman provides a stark contrast to the dark background. This painting likely alludes to Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, a holiday that takes place over four or five days in late October or early November in India. Sparklers are lit on the third day of Diwali, a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
