Green Parrot

Because of its ability to talk, the parrot often appears in Indo-Iranian tales as a messenger of moral wisdom. In the late 1700s and early 1800s, British merchants and civil servants of the East India Company commissioned paintings of native flora and fauna from Indian artists in European styles. This painting appears to depict a female Derbyan parakeet (Psittacula derbiana), also known as Lord Derby’s parakeet.
